Crossroads u

Crossroads University (Fall 2017)

August 27th - October 8th, 2017

$0 - $15

Crossroads U is an 8-week event that allows for deeper study of practical Christian living and theological topics. For Fall 2017, there are 5 different classes to choose from. Each one meets on 8 Sunday nights from 5:30-6:45 during the months of August, September, and October.

How to Weather the Storms of Life (Taught by Buddy Brazeal in the Worship Center; book cost is $0) Life is like a voyage. We sail on the sea of time between two eternities. The circumstances of life are like the weather. Sometimes there’s smooth sailing; other times, storms. You will face storms. Adrian Rogers shares three glorious truths that will help you weather the storms of life.

One to One Discipleship (Taught by Len & Verna Harvey in the Fellowship Hall; book cost is $15) This course is for one believer to help another believer learn the basics of his/her Christian faith. It helps lay nine foundation stones upon which believers can build the rest of their lives. Many believers today aspire to be disciples and to make disciples, but don’t know how. Through this study believers can learn practical applications on how to “give out” and not just “take in.”

The 5 Love Languages (Taught by Fred Earls in the Fellowship Hall; book cost is $10) Between busy schedules and long days, expressing love can fall by the wayside. We forget to compliment, to give gifts “just because,” to linger in an embrace. The things that say, “I love you” seem either not to get said or not to get through. This book is about saying it—and hearing it—clearly. No gimmicks. No psychoanalyzing. Just learning to express love in your spouse’s language.

The Armor of God (Taught by Melissa Harman in The Link-Room 3; book cost is $10) All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you. A cunning, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you—your emotions, your mind, your family, your future. But his reign stops right here, right now, with you. The enemy always fails miserably wen he meets a woman dressed for the occasion, a woman who is armed and dangerous. This Bible study is an action plan for putting on your armor and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory against the enemy.

The Heart of God's Story (Taught by Jamie Warnshuis in The Link-Room 1; book cost is $10) The Bible is a beautiful narrative with every element of a great story: tension, climax and resolution. On every page you read about a God who is passionate about a relationship with His people. Best of all, this story is true. It’s not only God’s story—it’s also your story. The heart of God’s story traces three central themes throughout the pages of Scripture, opening you eyes to the big picture. In addition to developing skills for inductive Bible study, you’ll read, memorize, journal and discuss the life-changing truth of God’s word.

Our speaker is Kelvin Cochran. Kelvin was born and raised in Shreveport, LA. At the age of 7 he became a Christian. After watching Shreveport firefighters put out a fire across the street from where he lived, he dreamed that one day he would be a firefighter. He became a firefighter with the Shreveport Fire Department in 1981.

Working his way through the ranks he was appointed Fire Chief of the Shreveport Fire Department in 1999. In 2008 he was appointed Fire Chief for the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department under Mayor Shirley Franklin. In August 2009 he was appointed by President Barack Obama to head the United States Fire Administration in the Department of Homeland Security. In June 2010 he was recruited back to serve as Fire Chief under Mayor Kasim Reed and served until January 2015.

Kelvin made national headlines when he was suspended for 30 days without pay in late November 2014 over a self-published book he had written called, Who Told You That You Were Naked? in which Cochran deals with a Biblical view of marriage and briefly mentions homosexuality. In January, after returning from the suspension, Cochran was informed that he would have to resign or be terminated.

Kelvin is a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia where he serves as a deacon and teacher/facilitator. He has a passion for men’s ministry and leadership development. Kelvin has been married to Carolyn Marshall for more than thirty years.
